About the Book
A new queen falls. A death lord rises. An ancient foe looms in the shadows. Sylvie Imanthiya is desperate to lead Faerie well and deepen the bond with her husband, former king Taylan Ashkalabek. But all hope of that vanishes when the winter solstice ceremony ends in disaster, stranding her and Taylan in the Deathrealm, and stripping the kingdom from her. With Faerie in chaos, Zad and Diza are separated once again: Zad to reconcile with an old mentor to stabilize the kingdom, and Diza to confront the nefarious Casimir in the mortal realm. But Casimir claims that a greater evil seeks to destroy both realms, an evil that Diza’s unique death magic can hold at bay—if she could only remember how. In the Deathrealm, Taylan is succumbing to the lure of specters from his past, and pushing away Sylvie’s love. Overwhelmed by decay and darkness, Sylvie must summon unexpected magic from the soul of Kyure to fight for her convictions and her husband’s heart. Shadows divide them. Their friends are in peril. If Sylvie fails, her marriage and her world will fall.

From the Author: About Zad
It’s no secret that I drew a lot of inspiration for the Star-Fae Trilogy from Irish and Scottish mythology. One fae creature that figures into a lot of Celtic legends is the pooka, a mischievous shapeshifter known for playing tricks on hapless farmers. I knew from the start that I wanted a pooka character in the Star-Fae books, but I didn’t originally expect pookas to play such a large role.
Then Zad showed up—the conniving black market leader who also happens to be tasked with protecting the world of Kyure and married to a powerful interdimensional traveler. If there’s trouble in Kyure, Zad is going to be caught up in it one way or another, and he faces each challenge as only a pooka can.
There are two major types of fae in Kyure: elementals (those who can manipulate various elements) and shifters (those who can shapeshift into an animal form). True to Celtic mythology, the pookas are shifters. While the pookas of Earth’s legends can often shift into multiple forms, those of Kyure can only shift into one, but it’s a truly awesome form (if they do say so themselves). They are horse shifters: strong, sturdy, averaging around 20 hands tall, and usually black with flowing manes and tails. While they don’t prefer one form other the other, they’re very proud of their horse forms and they retain some of their equine habits and body language even when in human form.
Pooka live in close-knit herds in the remote forests and plains of Faerie. Unlike the elemental fae, pookas place high value on family and community. They stick together during hard times, which happen frequently when the elementals try to lord it over them. While the elementals stereotype them as uneducated and uncultured, pookas are clever, resourceful, and display common sense that is grounded in the world around them. They’re also good natured and generally less treacherous than other fae, though if you do get on their bad side they won’t hesitate to use their strength and fighting skills. They’re fiercely loyal to each other and to anyone they count as a friend.
Zad reflects all these qualities in abundance, but he’s not quite an ordinary pooka. While most pookas never stray far from their herds, Zad’s destiny has taken him all over Faerie and beyond. The Lyrium (interdimensional guardians) chose him as a Pathminder when he was young, and that role has led him to explore all corners of the world, protect Dragonflies like Sylvie, take control of the black market in the mortal city of Sabellyn, and connect with the Lyrium empress Diza across dimensions.
While he never lost his earthy, live-in-the-moment personality, he has far broader experience and awareness of reality than most pookas. But while this sets him apart from his herd, he’s still close to them. They view him with pride even though he sometimes baffles them. And in Rothana, when disaster strikes Faerie, they look to him for help… in a way that surprises everyone.
